Communications technology is rapidly changing and forcing changes on electric utilities and 3rd party generators. Traditional leased audio and T1 telco circuits are quickly being phased out. Although fiber optic communications are widely used for substation-to-substation protection applications, it remains too costly to implement for many DER direct transfer trip applications.
